Movie | Zombie Nightmare | Fail/Pass-ish

Entertainingly awful or just plain awful, depending on your mood. Everything is poorly done about this flick, which can be hugely fun if that's what you're looking for. This is MST3K stuff. I was hoping for something more and there are some fun trivia elements here (West, Carrere, the music, the director/writer/"actor"...), but that's it. Thanks for the loan, PW!

  1. I never claimed it was good by any conventional standards although I have to give props to Adam West for his rakish performance as a jaded detective and any flick that uses Motorhead in their soundtrack can't be all bad.........

My favorite aspect of the film is the Voodoo angle which returns the zombie to its Carribean origins. Romero's "Night of the Living Dead", for better or worse, cemented the idea of the zombie as a shambling, mindless flesh eater into our collective conciousness forever more so it's refreshing to see another take on reanimated corpses. "Zombie Nightmare" is not a great film, it's not even a good film, but in an overcrowded genre with cookie cutter cadavers, it stands out.

  2. "The Serpent and the Rainbow" was my favorite 80s Voodoo zombie movie. In the 90s, "Maniac Cop 3" was surprisingly watchable(ish). For pure 70s blaxploitation, I'd give a shout out to "Sugar Hill" (not the Snipes vehicle).

  3. I really like "The Serpent and the Rainbow" too. Even though it's sensationalized, it gives a glimpse into a corner of the world that is little understood and often feared. I read an article about the making of that movie and Wes Craven and his crew really took some chances filming some of those scenes. There's a lot going there if you know what you're looking at.
