Movie | The Babadook | Liked It
What the...? What's with all of the movies I've seen lately with the violence towards children and animals? Well, this one is another. But still, this was an expertly done horror film and well worth watching.

Movie | The Night Listener | Really Liked It
Even though one of my three most detested movie elements is present (violence towards children) in this slow-paced, super creepy thriller, Armistead Maupin spins a fantastic tale assisted by a stellar cast including Robin Williams and Toni Collette. A must see if you find those descriptors interesting.

TV | Other Space | Really Liked It
This premise and format have been beaten to death but the writing and cast were so clever that it made up for it. It clicked with me and I'm looking forward to another season.

TV | The Messengers | Didn't Like It
How come every show on the CW looks the same? Still, I liked this enough to want to see more. We'll see.
Update: Lost interest after the second episode. Just didn't click.

TV | Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt | Really Liked It
Really fun sitcom and a perfect role for Ellie Kemper. I laughed and laughed through every episode. Brilliant!

Movie | Hit List | Didn't Like It...with much respect
Super ambitious and incredibly disturbing (too much for me - I couldn't even finish it and had to read the synopsis online) crime/drama/horror about a psychologically damaged hit man who ends up on a job so strange that it will alienate most viewers. From the director behind Sightseers, A Field in England and Ideal, this movie will frustrate most moviegoers to the point that they absolutely hate it. Yet, it was incredibly well done and featured a fantastic cast including Niel Maskell and Michael Smiley (Utopia), Emma Fryer and Ben Crompton (Ideal). This film includes everything that turns me completely off; violence towards animals and children and torture-porn. You've been warned.

TV | The Comedians | Didn't Like It
It's a little too self aware for my tastes, but it was watchable. Mainly because of Billy Crystal. Okay, entirely because of him. But there isn't much else here and we've already jumped ship after the second episode. Still, I think lots of folks would probably really like this.
Movie | The Boxtrolls | Really Liked It
If there was one thing I didn't like about it was that there really were no surprises. But with a voice cast that included Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Ben Kingsley and Richard Ayoade, how could you go wrong?
TV | Fortysomething | Didn't Like It
Interesting to see a very young Benedict Cumberbatch, who had to be in his mid-20s when they made this. I'm not his biggest fan, but I can see why people like him. Still, the script for this was a hot mess. It seemed like they couldn't quite make up their minds which way it was going, with plot lines fired out like a shotgun.

Movie | Visioneers | Liked It
Wanted to like it even more. Had a Terry Gilliam-esque quality to it (but nothing like Office Space). But it was so intentionally obtuse that it was impossible to connect to. It's not particularly funny either, even in a black-comedy sort of way. Cool cast and an interesting premise, though. Just not very...visionary.
Movie | 1-Ichi | Didn't Like It
I remember seeing this and that there was something interesting about it. What I hadn't remember is how poorly it was made, shot on video, had a dreadful script and how there really isn't much good about it whatsoever. Then I realized I was mixing this up with another movie by the same title that came out in 2008, a chanbara. Oops. Thanks for the loan anyway, PW!

Movie | John Wick | Liked It
Despite an unacceptable, gratuitous and manipulative animal cruelty scene, the action scenes were very good and the soundtrack was excellent. But the script could have been written by a monkey pushing selection buttons. European or Asian bad guy? CLICK; European. Banana. Unrealistically attractive or hideously ugly female assassin? CLICK; attractive. Banana.
The movie poster tagline reads, "Don't set him off". Wow, brilliant. Banana.
