Movie | Thin Ice | Pass

Somewhat similar and comparable to Fargo, the ending of this movie makes the whole thing worthwhile (though it's a bit rushed). For a black comedy, it's not all that funny, either. This is more of a crime drama. Worth a rental.

TV | Sherlock | Pass

Another good reworking of the old Sherlock stories. Unlike Elementary, this one is very stylish. But the bad thing is, in their attempt to make this version more interesting, they made Sherlock positively unlikeable. We literally wanted to kill the character ourselves - and he's supposed to be the good guy! And the stories are the same old ones you've read a million times. If you can get past that, this is definitely worth checking out.

Movie | Navajo Joe | Pass

I never really got past Burt Reynolds playing a Native American. Just never worked for me, regardless of how dark they made his skin. At least he didn't try to talk with a ridiculous accent.

The plot was simple, interesting and very familiar (standard revenge stuff). This movie is known for the relatively high level of violence for the times and I suppose it did have that.

The best part of the whole thing was Morricone's soundtrack. It's still rumbling in my head.

Movie | TerrorVision | PASS

Oh, how I adore this movie. It's hands-down the most perfectly goofy 80s monster comedy featuring an awesome cast. I love every minute of this ridiculous movie!

TV | Continuum | PAss

A canadian sci-fi with basically the same plot as Ashes to Ashes? Except it's the opposite; future cop goes back to (our) present instead of present cop goes back to the 80s.

Turns out this is a really good series. The only thing that keeps it from a full on PASS is the slight lack of style. It's a tad bland, somehow. Still, this is definitely worth a watch.

Movie | Skyline | PAss

Was it as bad as everybody said? Definitely not. Another homage to War of the Worlds, this movie is a blend of Battle: Lost Angeles, Cloverfield, Monsters and other similar movies. If you liked those movies, I don't see how you wouldn't like this one. But, the ending is probably what set people off. I loved the ending. I thought the finale was the best part - it had a bit of kick to it. Same directors that brought us AVPR (this was far superior to that).

Movie | Dabangg | PASS

Badass Bollywood!

A rogue cop takes on the bad guys with slick martial arts moves, woos the girl and breaks out into a flash mob at random. The music and production are first rate. I dare you not to tap your toe along with these tunes. I'd rate this a soft R for mild violence.

Pure lunacy and pure fun!

Movie | R'ha | PASS

Got six minutes to watch a super cool sci-fi short made outside of the Hollywood meat grinder? You betcha!

TV | Legit | Fail

Worth watching for DJ Qualls alone, this is not a compelling show. Nor is it funny. Considering that it's supposed to be a comedy, that's a slight problem.

Movie | Dead Geneis | Fail

Awful.

Movie | Dredd | PASs

I read comic books when I was a kid. I don't anymore, but I kept a lot of them. Unfortunately, I bought most of them used and I liked all of the really oddball stuff. No namby-pamby X-Men for me!

Judge Dredd was always one of my favorites. It was British, hyper-violent and hilariously satirical. I was such a huge fan that I even have a rare imported 12" vinyl record by "The Fink Brothers" (who were actually Madness) called "Mutants in Mega-City One" that I love and still listen to (it's called a record, kids, and it plays on a record player!).

After the 80s Stallone fiasco, you could be forgiven for being tentative about seeing this one. Don't be; this is a really good futuristic actioner. All of the elements are top notch.

Was there anything negative about it for me? Yes, somehow, the entire thing comes across a bit flat. For example, Paul Leonard-Morgan's fantastic soundtrack somehow gets lost in the shuffle. It's so good, that it's a downright dirty shame. Fix that by buying it. If you loved the soundtracks of the Tron remake, Outlander, Iron Man and Attack The Block, this is an essential purchase.

There really aren't a lot of surprises here. Don't expect any and you'll have a great time! A must see for gritty action (that has a nightmarish quality to it) fans. Why not make is a double with the Total Recall remake?

Movie | Champion | PASS

Inspirational documentary focused on Danny Trejo, one of the best living natural actors (in that he isn't "classically" trained...thank goodness). Well worth a watch!

TV | Out There | Fail

Unoriginal and yet another show that makes me question, "Why is this animated?"

Movie | Little Monsters | Pass

I remember really enjoying this when it first came out. Now, after the passage of (much) time, I still enjoyed it. Certain elements were dated and slightly irritating, but it's still worth a watch. Part of the 80s classic films that featured kids in peril, this one is similar to Pee-wee's Big Adventure, The Goonies and Adventures in the Forbidden Zone in that it features some super creative sets.

Movie | Inglorious Basterds | Pass-ish

I got suckered into watching this. It was free, so okay. Tarantino up to his usual tricks - horrifically long, boring scenes punctuated by needlessly over the top violence. Ho-hum. This movie really didn't offer much, with particularly one-dimensional characters and over the top acting from Pitt. The cinematography was gorgeous and the best part of this film.

Look how thrilled the faces are in the movie poster....yeah...

As usual with a Tarantino film, I came away nauseated.

Movie | Madagascar 3 | PASS

Afro Circus! Absolutely delightful and a must see!

Movie | Another Earth | PASS

If you enjoyed Brit Marling's acting and writing in Sound of My Voice as much as we did, then this is a must see. Low budget, intriguing, slow paced and full of emotion...perfect!

Movie | Black Moon | Pass

"A young girl who lives on a tropical island loses her parents to a voodoo sacrifice, but although she manages to escape the island, a curse is put on her. Years later, as an adult, she feels a strong compulsion to return to the island to confront her past. Her husband, her daughter and her nanny go with her, but once back on the island, the woman finds herself elevated by the locals to the stature of a voodoo goddess, and she begins her inevitable descent into madness, with disastrous results for her family." -IMDB

Actually pretty freaky. Sure, there's the melodramatic acting from the 30s, but it all has a similar feel to Island of Lost Souls. That's a good thing.

TV | DCI Banks | Pass

Decent police procedural. Why, oh WHY, can't they release this on Region 1 DVD?!%$^&*/1!

Sunday, January 6, 2013

Movie | Left For Dead | Fail

An amateur cast doing the best they can and decent production values don't save this movie from a poor script, incessant freeze frames, overly used slow motion and a dreadfully slow pace. Too bad, it had potential.

TV | Catfish | PAss

Continues the premise of the movie, to surprisingly good results. If you liked the movie, then you must see this show.

Movie | Catfish | PAss

Engrossing documentary about the dangers of online friendships and (specifically) Facebook. The guy at the center of the film is a, uh...character. He's very focused on himself and has his hands down his pants every two seconds. It's distracting and the production is quite poor, but this is still a good movie and worth watching.

Movie | Machete | Pass

"Machete don't text."

Over the top actioner starring a monster cast that is of the "grindhouse" ilk (meaning shock value trumps all else). If that's what you're looking for, this is it!

Movie | Sound of My Voice | PASSPASS

Just my cup of tea! I can't say much about this movie - just see it!
