Movie | Ghost in the Machine (93) | Liked It
If you like hilariously inaccurate animated Hollywood depictions of what the inside of a computer must be like (Lawnmore Man would be a great comparison), you definitely need to see this so very 90s horror flick which stars a good cast of very recognizable actors. It's not a good movie, but there are just too many goofy things about it not to have fun watching it.

Movie | Interzone | Liked It
Interesting to see this so soon after the surprisingly excellent America 3000. This film was pretty incoherent and featured a horrifically hard to hear dialogue track. At times, I couldn't even tell if they were speaking English or not. This was filmed in Italy (which was part of the problem, most likely) but it felt and looked Greek. Like A3, there were homosexual overtones throughout the film, but here it was ramped up several notches. For example, instead of a sexy dancing girl in a bar they've got a half naked dude grinding around and the muscle bound bouncer is wearing outrageously short hot pants. There's a lot of that going on and it's never really explained. Maybe the post-apocalyptic world values outward homosexuality more? But then, in the next scene, the poor dancer boy is getting punched in the stomach. It's weird. I'm thinking the somebody in the production just liked that sort of thing and thought it would be good to really focus on it; the director perhaps? And like in A3, many of the females are real life body builders who are extremely masculine (see the movie poster above).
Director Deran Sarafian did several other notable B-movies, including Death Warrant, and then got very busy directing for television, where he's at to this very day.
So this one was okay. If you're a subgenre freak like me, you'll enjoy it. Otherwise, skip it.

Movie | America 3000 | Really Liked It
The ludicrous script just kept getting better and better in this 80s post-apocalypse flick where the women rule and somehow cavemen have inexplicably returned. Everything about this was picture perfect cheese. The dialogue was a patois of keywords and anything ending in -ing had the letter g dropped. It was as ridiculous as it sounds.
The hair metal soundtrack by Tony Berg was just plain awesome. This is one that I'd like to have and will have to research to see if I can find it.
The martial arts were surprisingly good. Where did this choreography come from? None other than Ernie Reyes, Sr.! That's amazin' and the physical stunts make this movie even more worth viewin' (See? It's really annoying).
This was writer/director David Engelbach's first and last feature film (he also wrote Death Wish II and Over The Top), which is heartbreakin' (Can't stop now, it's like a virus). He had great talent and it would have been great to see a followup.
"Hot scan what I say," indeed and see this if you're in the mood for a Grade A B-movie!

TV | The Last Kingdom | Didn't Like It
I'm sure this is an excellent show. And it has Rutger Hauer and Ian Hart in it. Unfortunately, I find this time period to be extremely boring and it takes a certain something to really pull me in, which the first couple of episodes of this show did not. It probably gets great soon after I quit watching.

Movie | Supernova | Liked It
Much better than I was expecting, mainly because of the excellent cast. Reminded me of Sunshine. And though their names didn't end up helping to make this movie that it could have been, none other than Walter Hill and Francis Ford Coppola were involved in the making of it. This film is too reminiscent of such classics as the Alien franchise, which is why most people panned it, but it's still fun.
TV | JB Smoove: That's How I Dooz It | Liked It
The man is a genius, even if I didn't love every single shtick in this concert video. Still, there were more than just a couple that had me rolling on the floor. Especially the chicken who shows up to teach how to make fried chicken.
TV | Talking Saul | Really Liked It
Hugely enjoyable but to give us only two episodes really sucked. Surely there's so many things in the show to discuss that they could have made more.

TV | Vantastic | Liked It
Super low budget short format show. Not sure who this was made for (other than being a comedy), but I enjoyed it.

TV | The Detour | Really Liked It
Finally, an American sitcom with a brain. It's edgy, which is appropriate in this day and age. The time where simple one liners are acceptable is over.
Movie | Room 237 | Liked It
Documentary detailing what people see and read into The Shining. Often, it seems like they're reading into things that aren't there, but it's still very interesting. If Kubrick did even a fraction of the things they suggested, it would be outrageously amazing. But like the film says in the end, it doesn't even really matter.
TV | Winonna Earp | Liked It
Another comic book based show, this time Canadian made and shown here in the States on SyFy. Like so many of the offerings on that channel, the production values are excellent, as is the acting, music and FX. But there's something missing that I can't quite put my finger on. I think it's a lack of sophistication in the scripts, which is a problem for so many shows based around comics. They just don't satisfy a sophisticated viewer. Still, this was fun and worth watching when the mood was right.

TV | Death in Paradise (Series 3) | Liked It
Still formulaic and still enjoyable, but Miller has been replaced by the equally excellent Kris Marshall.

TV | Hap and Leonard | Really Liked It
When I read Joe R. Lansdale's books about the adventures of Hap and Leonard, I thought to myself, "This would make a great movie!" Well, they turned it into a television series and thank god they did. Just like in the books, the show contains a lots of homophobia, racism and other generally nasty things...I wonder if viewers won't understand that and there will be a backlash. Of course, nobody's watching it other than me, so that's probably not going to be a problem.
Rule 1.

TV | Portlandia (Season 6) | Liked It
Liked it and, as usual, there were some truly outstanding moments. But I can't help like feeling this show has jumped the shark. It would be good to go out on a high note. The problem is ironically the same as SNL; they don't know when to quit when they're ahead.

Movie | Grabbers | Liked It
Fun little creature feature set in modern times on a tiny island off the coast of Ireland. A few laughs (was hoping for more), but mainly it was just fun to watch the cast do their thing. There was a small role for the great Bronagh Gallagher, but her skills and presence were rather wasted. Nicely made but the soundtrack wasn't anything special. Still, worth seeing.

TV | Baskets | Really Liked It
Martha Kelly steals every scene she's in. It's also interesting to see Portlandia director Jonathan Krisel at work here; the man is a genius. And it's wonderful to see Louie Anderson return in such a triumphant and spectacular manner. He's amazing. I'm sure this show wasn't remotely what people were expecting and they bailed right away. Too bad, they missed an amazing show with tremendous heart. Genius, but the kind that certainly isn't for everybody. I think this show is for a very select few, who will get what they were going for. Which they did.

TV | Dark Matter | Liked It
I was surprised that I rather liked this Stargate SG-1-esque show and SyFy channel series in general. No surprise on the first count because it's from the same folks that made that show. But this one has shades of Firefly...the darker ones, which is a very good thing.
