Movie | The Raven | Liked It-ish

I so desperately want Cusack to get more great roles. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of them and I still hate movies set in the Victorian era. But the film was okay and I watched the entire thing. Gleeson's presence was entirely wasted.

Don't get too excited; it was no V for Vendetta.

  1. No Victorian era movies?? Even From Hell and Sherlock Holmes? The former was written by Alan Moore, the same guy that wrote V fro Vendetta.

I think we're in agreement about The Raven though. I remember wanting to like this and being disappointed.

  2. Yep. In general, Victorian era movies come across as too forced to me. It helps if there are actors that are unfamiliar, but I still find it a painful twisting of the English language and the setting and time is usually the driving force, which I don't generally find all that appealing...so there's that!

Sherlock Holmes, which I saw in the theater...like The Raven, I found it a bit empty. Maybe I was expecting more and the inclusion of some Wing Chun SHOULD have been a plus for me. But it wasn't. It all felt just too familiar and unfortunately, as much as I think he's a wonderful actor, I'm also a bit burned out on Downey. That all being said, I thought the first movie was entertaining and I didn't leave the theater. The second movie was a different story; I tried watching it three times and it was so hokey that I turned it off.

    Ah well.

But you got me on From Hell. I DID like that one, well worth the rental (didn't see it in the theater).

Now you've got me thinking which Victorian movie that I liked, if any...The Elephant Man is one, for sure. I also liked The Prestige, Gangs of New York, Coppola's Dracula, Vidocq...surely there are more but I can't think of them.

So, I do like a few but they have a tendency to transcend the setting. I'm sure I've missed some good ones because I have a tendency to avoid Victorian movies like the plague.

To each his or her own, right!?! Ha!

  3. Thanks for your comment, BTW! I'll have to check The Last Kingdom.

  4. P.S. Ever been to the Poe house in Philly? If you have, I think you'll agree it's pretty darn cool!
