Movie | Sherlock Holmes | Fail

What a disappointment! A superb cast and crew can't save this vapid, empty shell of a movie. The wonderful Downey and Law aren't given much to work with and the oppressively dark scenery can't add any actual mystery to this mystery that has no mystery in it. In fact, Holmes solves minor riddles constantly throughout, but can't figure out the stupidly obvious one that is the point of the whole thing. Ludicrous. Sir Conan Doyle would roll over in his grave.

There are some pretty impressive action and fight scenes that include a very small amount of my beloved Wing Chun Kung Fu, of which Downey is a student.

Guy Ritchie seems to have lost his way a bit since his divorce from Madonna. The less than focused RocknRolla was supposed to be the start of a trilogy. Maybe that's off now. Unfortunately, I've read mention of a Holmes sequel. It's possible that it will be better. Let's hope!

Wait till this comes out on DVD, when the expectations and ticket pricing are lower. Until then it's, sadly, a Fail.

Try a Basil Rathbone tour de force instead, The Pearl of Death for example, if you're in the mood for a Sherlock Holmes movie.
